About the Barrow Cadbury Trust

We focus on a small number of specific policy areas: criminal justice, migration, economic justice, racial justice and gender justice.

We focus on a small number of specific policy areas: criminal justice, migration, economic justice, racial justice and gender justice. We try to influence those areas by building or supporting alliances and ecosystems, creating evidence-based advocacy for change, and ensuring the voices of people affected by social injustices are heard. Much of our work is directed towards change at the national level, usually England and Wales, except for our economic justice programme, now focused on Birmingham

Our Work with EJB

Economic Justice Brum is supported by The Barrow Cadbury Trust as part of its work exploring how to make a fairer, more inclusive, sustainable Birmingham where everyone can thrive.

The Trust believes that economic justice in Birmingham will be won through a multi-layered approach: supporting personal empowerment to enable people to influence policy and practice. campaigning and advocating for change, and supporting organisations building alternative systems and approaches.

Our History

The Trust was founded by Barrow Cadbury and his wife Geraldine. Barrow was the grandson of John Cadbury, the founder of the chocolate business.

Barrow and Geraldine used their wealth to tackle profound social ills, including juvenile crime and urban poverty.  They did not regard themselves as philanthropists, rejecting the term itself and the patronage it implied. Instead,  Barrow and Geraldine were influential social reformers. They inspire our work today.
